Hallstatt World of Heritage, Austria (Part 1)

Entry kali ni sy akan terangkan dgn lebih detail mcm mana utk reach Hallstatt from Salzburg. Hopefully entry kali ni akan dapat membantu those yg tiada idea untuk ke sana since Hallstatt ni perkampungan terpencil di Austria dan jauh drpd bandar. So, memang kena plan betul2 sebelum decide utk ke sana, of course this entry ini juga tentu akan berguna kepada kami..Manalah tahu one day kami akan smpai ke sini lagi sebab percutian kami ke Hallstatt last April sngt singkat and we plan nak datang lagi ..InshaAllah..

For those yg belum tahu berkenaan Hallstatt, lets we discover about Hallstatt a bit more since this place sngt worth and superb utk dilawati incase you plan to have a vacation at Austria..One day trip pun sudah memadai if you don't have a lot of times to spend in Austria, but if you stay for another 2-3 days, it is much more better since you can explore many things in Hallsatt and around Salzkammergut Lake.Hallstatt is actually perkampungan kecil di Salzkammergut which was declared as one of the UNESCO World Heritage region in Austria..How i know about this place? hehe..At first, i found this place melalui drama bersiri Korea 10 years ago. Kalau tak silap tajuk drama tu Spring Waltz. Lepas tengok drama tu, memang terus jatuh cinta dengan Austria dan terus berazam utk sampai ke Hallstat. Alhamdulillah, impian sudah tercapai..

Importance Check List:

  • Make sure it's not rainy day by weather forecast – There is a lot walking in Hallstatt outdoor, and strong rainy day is not good.
  • Try make sure it's not public holiday in Austria, nor Sunday. Public transport is better in working days and Saturdays – also there might be less people in Hallstatt.
  • If you really need to take a trip to Hallstatt in public holidays or Sundays - you have to travel with train thru Atthang-Puncheim when you return from Hallstatt to Salzburg in Public Holidays or Sundays.

How to Get To Hallstatt?

Actually there are many ways you can reach Hallsatt..But, it is depends on your starting point and the season/weather itself..Basically, public transport is much more easier and enjoyable but it is applicable for bag packers and not suitable for family or groups yang ada baby kecil dan luggage yg banyak..Why? sebab ia akan memenatkan dan you will not enjoy the day you spent in Hallstatt..Unless, kalau you plan to spend more than 2 days kat sana then its worth. If you  plan to go to Hallsatt by car (mcm kami buat) then it should be no problem. But make sure your car ada GPS sebabnya, many routes you can choose to reach Hallstatt. From my experience, laluan utk ke Hallstat adalah sempit dan curam. Incase kalau berlaku accident, jalan raya akan ditutup serta-merta depends on the situation. So, you have to find another route rather than tunggu je jalan tu dibuka semula kan..So, ada GPS senang sebab they will inform us awal2 which route yg tak boleh dilalui sekiranya ada berlaku kemalangan or tanah runtuh..Another thing is avoid drive sendiri pada musim sejuk sebab jalan akan licin dan penuh dgn snow, unless klau you ni jenis dah biasa dan otai bab2 driving dalam keadaan licin dan snow..ehhe

1) By Bus from Salzburg

Salzburg – Bad Ischl – Hallstatt (Train) Station – Hallstatt Market

In Salzburg, the bus terminal is just outside of the doors of the main train station. You’ll find the bus to Bad Ischl near the far left corner of the square. The square, if you care to know, is called Südtiroler Platz. Find Bus #150 to Bad Ischl. There is a bus about once every two hours, and there are also occasional Express Buses which don’t stop everywhere. You can also board the same bus, including the Express Bus, at the Mirabell Platz in Salzburg, but if you have a lot of luggage, it’s best to get on at the Südtiroler Platz. Buy your tickets from the bus driver. I believe he only takes cash.In Bad Ischl board a train to Hallstatt. The bus station is right in front of the train station. Don’t worry about finding the right platform – it’s all right there.  But if you have time, you could spend a few interesting hours  in Bad Ischl until you continue to Hallstatt.

Bad Ischl is a wonderful place. Its my idea of a perfectly walkable town.  It’s easy to get around on foot, but difficult to negotiate with a car.  Until the end of WWI Bad Ischl was the summer residence of the Emperor of Austria and his entourage.  The Kaiser Villa and its estates are open to tourists, but visiting them and the town will take longer than a few hours. So if you can’t spend the time now, plan to come back another day.  It’s well worth it.

Get off at the Hallstatt train station.  The train station is actually not in Hallstatt, you’ll still have to make a trip across the lake on a ferry named Stefanie before you can set your foot in the old town. But crossing the lake on the Stefanie, especially on a morning when the sun hits Hallstatt, is perhaps the best part of the journey. Also, for most of  its existence just about the only way to get to Hallstatt was by water: you are following an old tradition.

Buy your tickets as you board the ferry. Contrary to what I said earlier, they are not included in the price of the train tickets. Returning to Salzburg is the reverse process.

Importance Note

  • The earliest bus depart from Salzburg bus station  at 08:15 am
  • Cost is 10.10e/person (one way) - pay to driver
  • Bus arrives at Bad Ischl bus station at 9:50 am
  • Make sure you sit on left side of the bus so you can get great landscape views during the bus trip.
  • Bad Ischl bus station locates next to Bad Ischl train station.

Bus 150 timetable from Bad Ischl to Salzburg

  • Departure at 17:24 (5:24pm) - You arrive to Salzburg at 18:57 (6:57pm).
  • Departure at 18:24 (6:24pm) - You arrive to Salzburg at 19:53 (7:53pm).
  • Departure at 20:24 (8:24pm) – This bus will end to St. Gilgen at 20:54 (8:54pm) – and change to another BUS 150 from St. Gilgen to Salzburg at 21:05 (9:05pm) – You arrive to Salzburg at 21:53 (9:53pm).

2) By Train from Salzburg
Salzburg – Attnang-Puchheim – Hallstatt Station – Hallstatt Markt

Buy your ticket at Salzburg’s main train station (hauptbahnhof) and find your way to the right platform (the OBB travel portal shows platform 7, but be sure to double check). Typically the train leaves from track #2, but be careful, sudden changes sometimes occur. Listen to announcements, and watch the boards.  It’s usually a train that goes at least as far as Vienna, but don’t stay on, change trains in Attnang-Puchheim. In Attnang-Puchheim get on the train to Hallstatt, and get off at the Hallstatt train station. As I described above, you still have to take the ferry to Hallstatt, but that is one of the added attractions of traveling by public transportation.

Importance Note
  • Train depart at 10:20 am
  • Cost is 3.70e per person (one way) - buy a ticket from Bad Ischl train station if you have not bought it already - cashier or ticket machine.
  • NOTE - Very important: Also buy return ticket from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl at the same time. Hallstatt train station is only "small" house with only one slow ticket machine - if there is a lot tourists without tickets, you might miss the train.
  • You can also buy and print the train ticket online ÖBB route planner.
  • Make sure you sit on the right side of the train – to get better landscape views during the short train trip.
  • Train arrives in the Hallstatt train station at 10:47 am.
  • In the Hallstatt train station, walk down to near lake (15m) and wait for the local ferry boat.
  • Ferry - (actually it's just boat) - cost 2.40 e per person (one way) - Pay to boat's cashier.
  • Ferry times are related to train - it should not take long - perhaps 5-10 min when ferry arrives.
  • 18:15 (6:15 pm) - Last ferry from Hallstatt  to Hallstatt train station

Ferry route takes to about 10 minutes, all ferry times are related to train time table of the Hallstatt train station. You can check all ferry times from the:  Cruising in the world Heritage Hallstatt-Dachstein

Train timetable from Hallstatt train station to Bad Ischl

  • Departure at 4:32 pm – arrive at Bad Ischl at 4:53 pm
  • Departure at 5:07 pm – arrive at Bad Ischl at 5:34 pm
  • Departure at 6:32 pm – arrive to Bad Ischl at 6:53 pm

If you would like to stay at Hallstatt  for few days and have kids in your group (also with a few big luggages), I would suggest to stay at hotel at Obertraun (and hotel near Obertraun train station), because you don't need to carry luggage into ferry boat – it's just easier to walk just into train in Obertraun. If you have no return ticket - it's easier to buy in Obertraun train station. In spite of that,
it's easy to walk to Hallstatt from Obertraun (4-5km perhaps), or take a ferry in summer times.
Obertraun have cable car to mountains area that are just awesome. NOTE: Obertraun cable car is open only at summer time. In summer time - You can go to Salt mines in Hallstatt and you can take full tour with ship. You cannot see everything in one day in summer. All (few) fountains are also closed during the winter. There is also Hallstatt museum - that takes it's own time.

I think the explanation above is more than enough for you to reach Hallstatt either via bus or train. Basically, all these information i got from my own experienced during my vacation at Austria last April and also search from Hallstattaustria.net and not forget from my reading at traveltimo.blogspot..

Check in into this hotel for 1 day..SR500/night

we could see ferry boat from our room..the view is very superb..

Fahrkarten ialah dalam bahasa German-ticket. So, ferry boat ticket utk tour Salzkammergut Lake dan ke Hallstatt train station boleh beli disini atau direct from boatman dalam ferry nnti..Since German dan Austria bersebelahan, certain word yg diguna oleh penduduk di sini lebih kurang sama..

Kami sampai di Hallsatt dah petang,So, activiti yg boleh dibuat hanya jalan2 disekitar village utk ambil gambar

Tenang sungguh duduk di sini..best kalau ada sebiji rumah percutian kat sini..hehe

Ada gerai kecil jual makanan.Mostly the menu is fastfood dan kebab..Betul2 bersebelahan our hotel..But, not halal sebab ada letak pork..

Along the street..muat utk laluan sebuah kereta sahaja.

Ada bnyk kedai yg jual souvenir dan hasil craft tangan..harga pun not too bad..hehe

Banyak tourist dr China

Malam2 just lepak di lobi hotel je..

Even Chinese created a copy of this mesmerizing beauty in 2011 in Huizhou, Guangdong, but the real charm can be found only in the original one which is only in Hallstatt. Back to the story, if you stay only one day in Hallstatt mmg tak cukup masa utk ke Salt Mine and Ice Cave which is located at downtown. At least you have to spend minimum 2 hours sebab kena masuk dalam underground utk sampai ke Salt Mine. Kalau winter if i am not mistaken Salt Mines ditutup. Waktu kami datang masa spring pun tak boleh masuk juga..Only waktu summer sahaja rasanya dibuka..If you interested utk masuk ke Salt Mines/Salzwelten boleh check Di sini dan Di sini for details information. But, kalau ada anak kecil around 1-3 years tak boleh masuk sebab agak bahaya dan tak sesuai..Nak masuk dlm underground tu pun kena pakai pakaian khas which is overall yg mcm pekerja off shore di tengah-tengah laut tu..hehe. Ok,perkara paling penting sekali ialah di Hallstatt no halal restaurant tau. So, kalau dtg by group or stay more than one day, please prepare siap2 roti dgn sardin ke, alatan dan bahan2 memasak ke kalau tak nak kelaparan..Macam kami, since bertiga je dan Humaira pun makan tak bnyak, kami beli kebab siap2 di Salzburg Haupbhanhoff (train staion) sebagai bekal utk dinner di Hallstatt since kami dah check awal2 lagi no halal restaurant kat sana. Itu sajelah activiti kami utk hari pertama di Hallstatt..Hubs pun keletihan sebab seharian driving.Malam tu aku sorang2 je keluar dr hotel utk ambil gambar tapi sygnya, bila waktu malam tiada perkara yg menarik boleh dilakukan di Hallstatt..nak amibil gambar pun gelap je sepanjang jalan.Kedai pun bnyk tutup.Last2 balik ke hotel dan tidur..Nak simpan tenaga utk esok plak sbb esok dalam tgh hari kami akan bertolak ke Vienna ..So, sempat lagilah kami nak explore Hallstatt sebelum menjelang tgh hari tu..Jangan lupa check my next entry k..hehe..--->>hallstatt-world-heritage-austria-part-ii
